One of the growing number of Christian groups seeking to make good use of the computer is working for the development of a full text library of theological reference works, accessible by dial-up, mail query, or open phone line.
Bible Research Network, Inc. was chartered as a non-profit corporation in August 1981, "To conduct and promote research in the Bible and Bible-related subjects (and) to provide for the utilization of the results of that research by other interested persons, thru an advanced information handling service...."
The vision toward which BRN is moving encompasses a nationwide network providing immediate access to information on all topics of Bible study. They plan to include various translations of the Bible, commentaries, current events reports, and a growing library of general theological works. It is hoped that eventually the equivalent of a major Seminary Library will be available to Pastors, Sunday School Teachers, Students, and interested laymen anywhere.
Current projects underway include :
1. Identification of people and organizations interested in the development of such a system.
2. Development of a prototype access system.
3. Participation in the SHARE (Systems, Hardware and Research for Evangelization -- sponsored by World Vision International thru their MARC group) working group indentifying Christian databases in computer or hard copy formats, and their potential users. The working group includes representives from World Vision, Campus Crusade for Christ, Gospel Recordings, The Center for the Study of the Future, The August Corporation, and BRN.
4. Development of funding for the acquisition of a Kurzwell omni-font optical character reader for the transfer of library materials to computer readable storage.
